Rails Hosting Explained
What Is Ruby on Rails Hosting?
Ruby on Rails is the full-stack web framework that favors convention over configuration. It gives you Active Record, routing, background jobs, caching, and built-in tools for real-time features, so small teams can ship complete products quickly.
A production Rails app needs more than a place to upload files. You need the right Ruby version, Bundler to install your gems, an application server like Puma that stays running, a reverse proxy for HTTPS and static assets, a database, and a process for background jobs.
A HostPapa VPS gives you root access to set up that stack yourself, or to deploy with Kamal, the container-based deployment tool from the Rails team.
Why Choose HostPapa

How to Deploy Ruby on Rails on a HostPapa VPS
A classic Rails deployment takes six steps. If you'd rather ship containers, Kamal can handle most of this for you.
Step 1: Install Ruby. Connect over SSH, install the build tools Ruby needs, and use rbenv or a similar version manager to install the Ruby version in your .ruby-version file.
Step 2: Install your gems. Clone your app, run bundle config set --local without 'development test', then bundle install to install production dependencies.
Step 3: Set credentials and environment. Set RAILS_ENV=production, provide RAILS_MASTER_KEY so Rails can read your encrypted credentials, and configure your database connection.
Step 4: Prepare the database and assets. Run bin/rails db:migrate and bin/rails assets:precompile before you start the app.
Step 5: Run Puma behind Nginx. Manage Puma with a systemd service, and configure Nginx to serve files from public and proxy everything else to Puma.
Step 6: Add HTTPS. Point your domain's DNS at the VPS, then use Certbot to issue a free Let's Encrypt certificate for Nginx and set it to renew automatically.

Pick the Right Environment
Which Plan Fits Your Rails Project?
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if you want full control over Ruby versions, Puma, Nginx, your database, and job workers, or you deploy with Kamal.
Choose a Managed VPS if you'd rather have our server administrators handle operating system patches, updates, and migration help.
Choose a dedicated server if your Rails platform serves heavy production traffic or runs several services side by side.

Can I host a Ruby on Rails app on HostPapa?
Yes, on a HostPapa VPS. Install Ruby with rbenv, run your app with Puma under systemd, and put Nginx in front as a reverse proxy.
Can I deploy with Kamal?
Yes. Kamal deploys your app as Docker containers over SSH to servers you control, so a VPS with root access is a natural target.
Which database should I use with Rails?
Rails works with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQLite. With root access you can install whichever one your app uses on the same VPS.
How do I run background jobs?
Run your job backend, such as Solid Queue or Sidekiq with Redis, as its own systemd service so it starts on boot and restarts on failure.
Do I need Managed or Unmanaged VPS hosting for Rails?
Unmanaged VPS plans suit developers who want full control of the server. Managed VPS plans add server administration from our team, which helps if you'd rather not handle operating system updates yourself.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can deploy your Rails app and test performance risk-free.
