React Hosting Explained
What Is React Hosting?
React is the open source JavaScript library for building user interfaces, maintained by Meta and a large developer community. Most React projects today start with a build tool like Vite. When you run the build command, your components, styles, and images are compiled into a folder of static files: one index.html, a few JavaScript bundles, CSS, and media assets.
React hosting is the environment that serves those files to your visitors. Because a client-side rendered (CSR) React app runs in the browser, the server's job is to deliver files quickly, return index.html for any route your app handles, and keep every request on HTTPS. That's why a standard web hosting plan is a strong fit for single-page applications, dashboards, portfolios, and marketing sites built with React.
Things change when you add server-side rendering (SSR). Frameworks like Next.js and React Router in framework mode render pages on the server, which means a Node.js process has to stay running. That workload needs a VPS with root access, where you control the runtime, the process manager, and the reverse proxy.

How to Deploy a React App on HostPapa
Getting a React app live on web hosting takes six steps, and none of them need a server-side runtime. Build on your own machine or in CI, upload the output, and add one rewrite rule for routing.
Step 1: Build your app. Run npm run build in your project. Vite writes the output to a dist folder, while older Create React App projects use build. Anything prefixed with VITE_ ends up in the public bundle, so keep private API keys out of those variables.
Step 2: Set your base path. Deploying to a subfolder like yourdomain.com/app instead of the domain root? Set the base option in your Vite config before you build so your asset paths resolve correctly.
Step 3: Upload your files. Copy the contents of dist, not the folder itself, into public_html using File Manager, your FTP client, or cPanel's Git Version Control.
Step 4: Add a rewrite rule. React Router handles URLs in the browser, so refreshing a page like /dashboard/settings asks the server for a file that doesn't exist. Add an .htaccess file that turns on Apache's rewrite engine, skips real files and folders, and sends every other request to /index.html.
Step 5: Turn on HTTPS. Confirm your Free SSL certificate is active, then force HTTPS so every route in your app loads securely.
Step 6: Ship updates with confidence. Vite adds a content hash to your JavaScript and CSS filenames, so you can cache those files for a long time. Keep index.html uncached so visitors pick up each new release right away.

Pick the Right Environment
Web Hosting or VPS for Your React Project?
The right plan depends on where your app renders.
Choose web hosting if your React app is client-side rendered, you deploy a static build, and your data comes from third-party or existing APIs. This covers most single-page applications, internal dashboards, portfolios, and landing pages.
Choose a VPS if you use server-side rendering, run your own Node.js or Express API next to the frontend, need WebSockets or background jobs, or want to deploy with Docker. Root access lets you install any Node.js version, run a process manager like PM2, and configure Nginx or Apache as a reverse proxy.
Choose a dedicated server if your React platform serves heavy production traffic, runs several services side by side, or has compliance requirements that call for full hardware isolation.

Can I host a React app on shared web hosting?
Yes. If your React app is client-side rendered, the production build is a set of static files that any HostPapa web hosting plan can serve. Upload the contents of your dist or build folder to public_html, add a rewrite rule for routing, and your app is live.
How do I fix 404 errors when I refresh a React Router page?
Refreshing a deep link sends that path to the server, which doesn't have a matching file. Add an .htaccess file next to index.html that rewrites requests for anything that isn't a real file or folder to /index.html. React Router then reads the URL and renders the right view.
Do I need Node.js on the server to host a React app?
Not for a client-side rendered app. You need Node.js on your own computer or in your CI pipeline to run the build, but the server only delivers static files. You need Node.js on the server when you use server-side rendering or run a Node.js API, which is what our VPS plans are for.
Can I host Next.js or another server-rendered React framework?
Yes, on a HostPapa VPS. Root access lets you install the Node.js version your framework needs, keep the app running with a process manager like PM2, and put Nginx or Apache in front of it as a reverse proxy.
Can I deploy my React app from GitHub or GitLab?
Yes. cPanel's Git Version Control can clone a repository into your account and deploy files with a .cpanel.yml file. Many developers also build in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI and upload the output automatically over FTP on every merge to the main branch.
Can my React frontend connect to a backend API?
Yes. Your app can call any API over HTTPS. If you host the API yourself, run it on a VPS and set CORS headers so your frontend's domain is allowed to make requests. Keep private keys on the server, never in the React bundle.
Does HostPapa include an SSL certificate for React hosting?
Yes. Every web hosting plan includes a Free SSL certificate, so your React app loads over HTTPS and browsers show the padlock your visitors expect.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee1, so you can deploy your React app and test performance risk-free.
