Next.js Hosting Explained
What Is Next.js Hosting?
Next.js is the React framework from Vercel for building full-stack web apps. It adds routing, server-side rendering (SSR), static generation, Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR), API routes, and Server Actions on top of React.
Those server features are what make Next.js hosting different from hosting a plain React build. SSR, ISR, and Server Actions all need a Node.js process that's running whenever a request comes in. That means your hosting has to let you install Node.js, keep a long-running process alive, and route web traffic to it.
A VPS gives you exactly that. If your project is fully static and built with output: 'export', there's no server to run, and a web hosting plan can serve the exported files.
Why Choose HostPapa
A Reliable Home for Your Next.js App
Next.js does its best work when the server behind it is fast and predictable. HostPapa VPS plans give your app dedicated resources and the control to run it your way, with support that's there around the clock.

How to Deploy a Next.js App on a HostPapa VPS
Self-hosting Next.js comes down to six steps: build a standalone server, run it with a process manager, and put a reverse proxy with HTTPS in front of it.
Step 1: Install Node.js. Connect to your VPS over SSH and install a current LTS release of Node.js with nvm or your distribution's NodeSource packages.
Step 2: Build in standalone mode. Set output: 'standalone' in next.config.js and run npm run build. Next.js produces a minimal server in .next/standalone with only the dependencies it needs.
Step 3: Copy the static files. The standalone output doesn't include public or .next/static, so copy both folders into the standalone directory before you start the server.
Step 4: Run it with PM2. Start the app with pm2 start server.js --name my-app, then run pm2 startup and pm2 save so it restarts automatically after a reboot. Use pm2 reload for zero-downtime deploys.
Step 5: Put Nginx in front. Configure Nginx as a reverse proxy that listens on ports 80 and 443 and forwards requests to your app's local port, such as 127.0.0.1:3000. Your app never has to run as root or bind to a public port.
Step 6: Add HTTPS. Point your domain's DNS at the VPS, then use Certbot to issue a free Let's Encrypt certificate for Nginx and set it to renew automatically.

Pick the Right Environment
Which Plan Fits Your Next.js Project?
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if you're comfortable on the command line and want full control over Node.js versions, PM2, and Nginx. This is the most common setup for SSR, ISR, and Server Actions.
Choose a Managed VPS if you'd rather have our server administrators handle operating system patches, updates, and migration help while your team focuses on the app.
Choose web hosting if your site is a static export with no server-side features. You'll upload the out folder like any static site.
Choose a dedicated server if you're running high-traffic production apps or several Next.js services side by side.

Can I run Next.js server-side rendering on HostPapa?
Yes, on a HostPapa VPS. Build with output: 'standalone', run the server with a process manager like PM2, and put Nginx in front of it as a reverse proxy. SSR, ISR, API routes, and Server Actions all work in this setup.
Can I host a static Next.js export on web hosting?
Yes. If your app uses output: 'export' and doesn't rely on server features, next build writes static files to the out folder. Upload them to public_html on any web hosting plan.
Which Next.js features need a server?
Server-side rendering, Incremental Static Regeneration, API routes, Server Actions, middleware, and on-demand image optimization all need a running Node.js server. A fully static export can't use them.
How do I update my Next.js app without downtime?
Build the new version, copy it into place, and run pm2 reload my-app. PM2 restarts your app's processes one at a time so visitors don't see an outage.
Do I need Managed or Unmanaged VPS hosting for Next.js?
Unmanaged VPS plans suit developers who want full control of the server. Managed VPS plans add server administration from our team, which helps if you'd rather not handle operating system updates yourself.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can deploy your Next.js app and test performance risk-free.
