GitLab Hosting Explained
What Is Self-Hosted GitLab?
GitLab is a complete DevOps platform that brings Git repositories, merge requests, issue tracking, CI/CD pipelines, and container and package registries together in one place. The Community Edition is free to self-host.
Self-hosting GitLab gives your team full control over where your code lives, who can access it, and how it's backed up. It also means GitLab needs a server with enough memory and storage to run its web services, database, background jobs, and Git storage together.
A HostPapa VPS gives you root access and dedicated resources for that workload. Size your plan using GitLab's installation requirements, then scale up as your team and pipelines grow.
Why Choose HostPapa

How to Install GitLab on a HostPapa VPS
Installing GitLab with its official Linux package takes six steps, from sizing your server to protecting your backups.
Step 1: Size your VPS. GitLab's installation requirements say the Linux package needs about 2.5 GB of storage, recommend planning at least 40 GB of disk for a basic install before any repository data, and note that GitLab can run with at least 8 GB of memory in some cases. CPU and memory needs grow with your users and workload.
Step 2: Point a domain at your server. Create a DNS record, such as gitlab.example.com, that points to your VPS's IP address.
Step 3: Install the Linux package. Connect over SSH, add GitLab's official package repository, and install GitLab with EXTERNAL_URL set to your domain, such as https://gitlab.example.com.
Step 4: Turn on HTTPS. When the external URL starts with https://, the GitLab Linux package can request and renew a Let's Encrypt certificate for you automatically.
Step 5: Set up email. Add your SMTP settings to /etc/gitlab/gitlab.rb and run gitlab-ctl reconfigure so GitLab can send notifications and password resets.
Step 6: Back up everything. Schedule gitlab-backup create, and store copies of gitlab.rb and gitlab-secrets.json separately, since application backups don't include them.

Pick the Right Environment
Which Plan Fits Your GitLab Instance?
Choose an Unmanaged VPS if you want full control over GitLab's configuration, upgrades, runners, and backups.
Choose a Managed VPS if you'd rather have our server administrators handle operating system patches, updates, and migration help.
Choose a dedicated server if you have a large team, heavy CI/CD usage, or compliance requirements that call for full hardware isolation.

How much RAM does GitLab need?
It depends on your users and workload. GitLab's installation requirements note that GitLab can run with at least 8 GB of memory in some cases. Check GitLab's current requirements before choosing a plan.
Can I run GitLab Runner on the same VPS?
You can for light use, but CI jobs compete with GitLab for CPU and memory. For regular pipelines, install GitLab Runner on a separate VPS and register it with your instance.
Do I need a license to self-host GitLab?
No. GitLab Community Edition is free and open source. GitLab also sells paid tiers with extra features if your team needs them.
How do I keep GitLab up to date?
Upgrade through GitLab's package repository and follow its upgrade paths, which may require stepping through certain versions in order. Take a backup before each upgrade.
Is self-hosted GitLab private?
Yes. Your repositories and data live on your VPS, and you control who can sign in, which projects are public, and whether sign-ups are open.
Does HostPapa offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every plan is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can set up GitLab and test performance risk-free.
