How to upload website files using Dreamweaver FTP

To upload files via Dreamweaver:

There are two things you will need to do in order to upload your files via Dreamweaver.

  1. Set Up the Remote Connection Info
This assumes that you have already gone through the “New Site” wizard and just need to add the file transfer connection information for your HostPapa account.

    1. Click “Site” on the menu bar and select “Manage Sites” from the list. A pop-up window will appear.
    2. Select your site from the list and click the “Edit” button.
    3. Click on the “Advanced” tab.
    4. In the “Category” column on the left, click “Remote Info”
    5. Add your connection settings:
    6. Access:  Select “FTP” from the list. The rest of the form will update to include the fields listed below.
    7. FTP host: Enter your domain name without the “www.”
    8. Host directory:  /public_html/
    9. Login:  Your current cPanel user name (this is also your FTP user name)
    10. Password:  Your current cPanel password (this is also your FTP password)
    11. You should not need to change any of the other settings.
    12. Click the “Test” button beside the “Login” field. This will test your FTP settings by establishing a brief connection with the server.
    13. Click the “OK” button. The Site Definition window will close.
    14. Click the “Done” button to close the Manage Sites pop-up window.
  2. Connect and Upload
Once you have finished designing your site, you can upload it directly from Dreamweaver.

    1. Expand the “Files” sidebar on the right.
    2. Click the “Connect to remote host” icon (the one that looks like two electrical cord plugs).  When you connect, the icon will change to show the two plugs joined.
    3. Change the “Local View” option to “Remove View” in the drop-down list. The file display immediately beneath the file controls should change to show the contents of the /public_html folder on your HostPapa account.
    4. Click the “Put File(s)” icon (the blue upward-pointing icon). Dreamweaver will upload all your files to the server.
    5. If you receive a message asking if you want to upload dependent files, click “Yes.”
    6. When the files have finished uploading, click the “Disconnects to remote host” icon (the one that looks like two electrical cord plugs joined). When you disconnect, the icon will change to show the two plugs separated.

You should now be able to view your site online! If you cannot, you may need to click the refresh button on your Internet browser – it sometimes does not check to see if anything has changed on a website and may still be showing you old information.

To download files from a remote server using Dreamweaver Files panel:

  1. Navigate to Windows >> Files.
  2. Select the files that you wish to download.

You can select your files in the Remote view or the Local view, if preferred. If you activate the Remote view, Dreamweaver will copy the selected files to the local site. If you activate the Local view, Dreamweaver will copy the remote versions of the local files to the local site.

Note: Use the Synchronize option to get only the files the remote version of which is more recent than the local version.

  1. To get the file, you can choose one of the following:
  • From the Files panel toolbar, click on the Get button. OR
  • Control-click (Mac) or Right-click (Windows) the desired file in the Files panel. A context menu will appear. Select Get.
  1. On the Dependent Files dialog box, select Yes to begin the download.

Select No if you already have local copies of the dependent files. The default is set to not downloading dependent files.
If you want to change this setting, go to Edit >> Preferences >> Site.

This is how Dreamweaver will download the selected files:

  • For Check In/Check Out systems, you will get a read-only local copy of the file. The remote site or testing server will keep the file available for other team members.
  • For systems other than Check In/Check Out, you will get a read-write copy of the file.

Note: When working with multiple people on the same files, do not disable the option Enable File Check In and Check Out. If other collaborators use the Check In/ Check Out system, you should do the same.

Click Cancel in the Background File Activity dialog box, if you want to stop the file transfer at any time.

To download files from a remote server using Dreamweaver Document window:

The file must be active in the Document window. Then, choose one of the next options to download it:

  1. Click Site >> Get.
  2. In the Document window toolbar, click the File Management icon. Then, click Get from the menu.

Notes: Dreamweaver will try to determine to which locally defined site your file belongs to, if it is not part of the current site from the Files panel.
If the file belongs only to one local site, Dreamweaver will open that site to execute the Get operation.

To display the FTP log:

  1. From the upper right corner of the Files panel, select the Options menu.
  2. Go to View >> Site FTP Log.

Note: To display the log, click FTP Log from the Expanded Files Panel.
