Discontinuation of TLS 1.0/1.1

NOTE: Only older devices and computers, that don’t support TLS 1.2 or higher, will be affected.

Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 and 1.1 are security protocols for establishing encrypted channels over computer networks. HostPapa shared servers supported these protocols for a long time. However, due to evolving regulatory requirements as well as new security vulnerabilities in TLS 1.0 and 1.1, we decided to disable these protocols. Vulnerabilities can allow attackers to intercept and tamper data between websites and their users. This could include credit card data, intellectual property, credentials; all are the attacker’s prime targets.

This means that any connection using these protocols will no longer work as expected. Since SSL/TLS protocols support a wide variety of services(Exim/Dovecot/Apache/WebDisk) as well as other protocols, bear in mind that disabling it will probably cause some problems for old systems.

Desktop and laptop operating systems that might be affected:

  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows 7
  • Windows 8
  • OS X 10.2
  • OS X 10.3
  • OS X 10.4
  • OS X 10.5
  • OS X 10.6
  • OS X 10.7
  • OS X 10.8
  • Linux

Tablet and mobile device operating systems that might be affected:

  • Android 1
  • Android 2
  • Android 3
  • Android 4
  • iOS 1
  • iOS 2
  • iOS 3
  • iOS 4

How do I know if I will be affected by the change and what I can do?

Mail connection problems

If you are using an older operating system on your device and if you experience any issues with sending or receiving emails, you might be affected by the discontinuation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1. You might also get an error message in your mail client. It could say something similar to this:

Your server does not support the connection encryption type you have specified. Try changing the encryption method. Contact your mail server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for additional assistance.

If you are affected by the change, you have three options to solve this:

  1. Update your email client and operating system to the latest version available
  2. Use Webmail interface until you resolve these issues: e.g webmail.domain.ca
  3. Use Non-SSL Settings for your mail-client if no option to upgrade the OS or mail-client (IMAP port 143 / SMTP port 587 / POP3 port: 110)

Website connection problems

If you are using an older operating system or browser(Mozilla/Internet Explorer/Chrome) and if you experience any issues with accessing the website HTTPS, you might be affected by the discontinuation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1. You might also get an error message in your browser. It could say something similar to this:

The reason you are seeing the “Not Secure” warning is because the web page or website you are visiting is not providing an encrypted connection.

If you are affected by the change, you have these options to solve this:

  1. Update your browser and operating system to the latest version available
  2. Use Cloudflare for your website if no option to upgrade the OS or browser

Remote connections to the server

If you are using an older operating system and cPanel WebDisk or Remote MySQL and if you experience any issues with accessing the server, you might be affected by the discontinuation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1. You might also get an error message in your application. It could say something similar to this:

Connection Failure: Invalid connection string attribute

If you are affected by the change, you have these options to solve this:

  1. The solution is to upgrade both your Remote application and operating system to the latest version available
  2. Replace the Remote application (e.g MSSQL) if there are no updates available which supports TLS v1.2

Still using Windows 7

If you are using an older operating system(Windows7) and if you experience any issues with accessing the website or emails, you might be affected by the discontinuation of TLS 1.0 and 1.1. This old operating System could generate multiple errors when accessing the website or using a mail-client(Outlook) to access your emails.

If you are affected by the change, you have these options to solve this:

  1. The solution is to upgrade the operating system as soon as possible
  2. If the upgrade is not a solution, then a fix could be applied in your computer which is for advanced users
